The Committee for Libyan National Action in Europe is organizing a demonstration tomorrow 29th December 2005 (2.00 pm) in front of the Libyan Embassy in London in solidarity with the 426 Libyan children infected by the HIV virus in Benghazi hospital (51 of them have already died) and to demand an international investigation to this case in which 5 Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor have been accused of injecting the children with the virus.
The accused were found guilty and sentenced to death by a court in Benghazi on May 2004 and after the an appeal to the Supreme court by the lawyers representing the accused, a new ruling on 25th December 2005 was reached and the Libyan Supreme Court has ordered a retrial after allegations of torture and forced confessions. All this and other twisting of events have lead to more questions and skepticism about the whole issue.
As we believe there is no independent judicial system in Libya and the country is ruled by a dictatorship, this issue has to be brought to the attention of the international community so pressure can be exerted upon the Libyan regime to stop exploiting the case for political gains. We, therefore, appeal to all human rights organizations, the World Health Organization, the European Community and the United Nations to support our call for an international investigation so all questions can be answered without any pressure or influence by the Gaddafi regime.
