The Other Lockerbie
1st May 2009

On Monday 27th the British Courts started the review of the conviction of the Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi who was found guilty of the Lockerbie Bombing on the 31st January 2002 and sentenced to Life Imprisonment to be served in Greenock Prison near Glasgow. The Lockerbie Disaster in 1988 still holds the record for being the worst Terrorist Attack causing loss of life in Britain. Was it the Libyan Regime that was responsible? Did Gaddafi order the attack in retaliation for Thatcher’s bombing of Libya in 1986 in which Gaddafi’s 2 year old adopted daughter was killed? Was Al-Megrahi really responsible? Nothing is clear. None of it can be categorically proven without doubt and there are plenty of alternative theories that stack up just as well as the Libyan plot.

But there was another disaster – just as mysterious – that people have forgotten about and is rarely referred to, the Libyan Boeing 727 which crashed on the 22nd December 1992. The passenger plane was on an internal flight from Benghazi to Tripoli and all 147 passengers and 10 crew on board died when the 727 crashed in mid-air with a Libyan Military aircraft. Miraculously the pilots of the military plane survived by parachuting clear of the disaster. There are plenty of theories about this too. Only this time the finger of blame is pointed firmly in the Direction of the Maverick Dictator, Col Gaddafi with no other suspects. Gaddafi notoriously likes his little ironies. The Flight Number of the Lockerbie Disaster was PN103. Flight Number of the Libyan 727 was PN1103. Date of the Lockerbie disaster – 21.12.88 – Date of the Libyan disaster 22.12.92. Could it have been a co-incidence? On the day the Libyan plane was brought down it was a clear sunny day, over a dessert in a vast clear sky. The pilot was Ali Al Sakaih who had been a personal pilot to Gaddafi so a highly qualified and trusted pilot. Even though the plane came down over the dessert, the Libyan Government denied they found any wreckage.

Does it make sense to bring down one of your own planes to punish the British for putting sanctions on Libya in retaliation for Lockerbie? Yes it does when you take into account that many of the passengers were British workers who regularly flew the route, when you take into account the Benghazi is a location of much political dissent against the regime and the inhabitants are regularly subjected to collective punishments and finally when the action puts pressure on the British Government to lift the sanctions against Libya which had restricted the supply of airline parts. But it only really makes sense if you are a Despotic Dictator with no regard for Human Life and care nothing for the well being of your people.
