A Letter To The Community

As I told you on Saturday, my heart was full. It was a beautiful night and I got more recognition than I deserve. The setting was elegant and our community looked very bright and beautiful. I cannot ask for more. This small community is a sample of many communities in exile. We carry with us the dreams, smells, aspirations and the future of the great homeland that we came from. Our continuous struggle to help out so far comes short. I look at our nation of Arabs, Kurds, Amazigh, Armenians, Muslims, Christians and Jews and I see the angry face of our heritage. I see intolerance, discrimination, abuse of women and a culture that is portrayed as the opposite of enlightenment. I see young men and the emphasis on young men, who have no future so they're living in a past that they scarcely know. As I told you on Saturday I lived in that culture and I know better. I know a culture that not only can be tolerant but was first in advocating equal rights. I know a culture that contributed to chemistry, biology, mathematics, astronomy and poetry. I know a generous culture that day in and day out is attempting to survive, flourish and love people. I know my mom, who like all of your moms represents these simple values of respect, of humanity, hard work and eternal optimistic view of the future. So don't despair. If all of us keep doing our small parts the good face of our culture will ultimately shine. These are not the words of a teenager; it’s my forty years of experience that taught me that if you have a good cause and we do, you should keep fighting for it. Because the bottom line it's not about you and again the emphasis it's not about you. We don't have to enjoy the fruit of our struggle.

The event on Saturday was a beautiful face of our community and I am humbled and indebted. I want, Again to thank you for striving to show a different face of our community that not many people see.

I wish you well.

Ali al-Tarhouni
