Is there a policy for education in Libya at all?
Education has been and will be the biggest and the long-term victim of policies led by ignorant, destroying, corrupting and the controlling ideology adopted by Gaddafi.. Clearly, as for most notorious dictatorships, education has been the biggest enemy of Gaddafi’s regime and his first target to destroy. He manifested that by killing and chasing away all the highly educated people who stood for what they values.
What Gddafi has been doing is no different from that of religious figures including those of Islam (sorry for any offence caused). The old-fashioned methods that Gaddafi has been using to maintain power and control have been used through the history to maintain control over people such as by imposing ignorance and prevent people from gaining valuable knowledge. Typically to his religious and dictators predecessors, Gaddafi only offered what he thinks is right for his citizens and only what would support his control. This controlling ideology has been the basics of religions in that people are not permitted to use their minds to their full extent nor they are allowed to question everything, instead rules of thinking behaviour have been set for them and the thinking “job” is not meant for them.
When I think about what education in Libya needs in order to get back on the global educational track and join the global race for knowledge, I sink in a deep hall of despair and bitterness. How long will it take? And what kind of people will it takes, what about the already existing population who have no concept of education, national progress, work ethics and discipline. They are the victims of Gaddafi’s systematic effort and policies of imposing ignorance and sinking the whole nation in a deep ocean of ignorance and despair.
It will take a punch of highly-determined and educated people who posses a great vision of future and a strong sense of responsibility towards the existing generation as well as towards the future ones, and who put the progress and interest of their nation ahead of their personal and social needs. Will ever be out there such people?
