I am extremely concerned about the news coming out from one of the most notorious prisons in Libya, Abu Saleem Prison, where more than 600 opinion prisoners have been kept without any trials and in very poor conditions for many years. These prisoners are facing another massacre like the one that was committed by the Gathafi’s regime in 1996 . The prisoners have been protesting for days now to improve their prison conditions. Unfortunately, the Libyan Gathafi regime has given the prisoners an ultimatum to end the protest. If the prisoners do not end their protest and go back to their isolated cells, then special forces will storm the prison by Monday 9th October 2006. I urge you to move fast to stop a second massacre against unarmed prisoners. Please note that one or two prisoners have already died two days ago and many injured. The Libyan forces use live ammunition against unarmed prisoners and currently are surrounding the prison.
Your urgent action and response will save lives and would be very much appreciated.
