Tragedy of the River Euphrates*

Ali Hussein

Stand a little by the River Euphrates
What do you see?
Helmets belong to soldiers who came
From faraway lands
Tarnished with rust
Stay a little longer
What do you see?
Rotten corpses of foreign soldiers
Covered with heap of earth
Sand and dust.
Just to be fair
Harden the stare
Try to remember
The good days of
Old and rare
When the moon gave the river
The colour of silver
And the shine of crystal
When the dates were
Pure and vestal.
Then came the cowboys
From Arizona, Texas and Denver
Stupid and crazy,
Blind and rude
They gave the river
The colour of red
And for red is the colour of blood.
Stand a little by the Euphrates
Where the giants of Arabia once stood
Don’t vex your heart alone
Don’t weep and moan
Keep the stare.
Speak with the voice of silence
Oh, my grief
This I cannot bare.
